REVOLUTION 17 REPORT
Despite a direct clash with the rugby world cup final the Manchester Velodrome was once again packed for the start of this season’s Revolution series on Saturday night.

Star of the show was T-Mobile sprint sensation Mark Cavendish and the Manxman didn’t disappoint taking a high speed victory in the opening motor paced Scratch race and again with Ed Clancy in the 1km Madison Time Trial. The pair had a hard fight on their hands after a 10 second handicap reduction helped Emma Trott and Ella Hopkins set a time of 57.561. Clancy and Cavendish showed exactly why they had held the event record for so long though with a blistering display and seamless hand sling to stop the clock at 57.393.

Top British sprinter Jamie Staff flew the flag for the British contingent in the sprint racing. Staff, from Ashford in Kent, put in a blistering turn of speed in the Keirin to blow the field apart winning by a clear five meters over Craig MacLean and ex Keirin World Champion Jose Antonio Escuredo. Staff followed up this form in the two man Team Sprint where he joined forces with Jason Queally to destroy the field clocking a time of 31.583.

Other highlights of the racing included a lung bursting 15km Scratch Race where four riders blew the race apart taking a lap to set up a four man sprint with Chris Newton proving victorious over David O’Loughlin, Mike Friedman and Magnus Backstedt.

The addition of three elite women’s races to the programme also proved a huge success with attacks, tight finishes and plenty of action proving a real crowd pleaser. Considering the difficulty to even find a field a couple of season’s ago this shows immense progress in the women’s scene in the UK. Wins from Lizzie Armistead, Becky James and Alex Greenfield set the standard for more elite women’s racing across the season.

In the DHL Future Stars Dan McLay from the East Midlands team and Katie Fearnehough from Yorkshire took the first leaders jerseys with both riders on 88 points - for the full Future Stars race report please click here.

"I had a great evening, it was good to get back on the track and I've now got the buzz for it again. The racing at Revolution is always good for that. We're off to Australia now for the Team Pursuit at the World Cup but will be back for more racing after Christmas."
