WELCOME TO THE FUTURE STARS
Now in its fifth year the ‘Future Stars’ competition has often provided more action and drama than the elite events and has provided invaluable experience for some of Britain’s most promising new talent. At 15 and 16 years of age the future stars riders are at the perfect stage to benefit from the racing environment at Revolution. Riders such as Ian Stannard, Ben Swift and Andy Tennant have all moved into British Cycling’s Olympic Academy following success in the ‘Future Stars’ with numerous other riders now part of the Olympic Development programme.
The competition provides an excellent environment to develop our stars of the future giving them more racing and more experience of a competitive arena. The national league also suceeds in nuturing team work and tactics along with plenty of action. Indeed, the West Midlands will have to defend their title in the team competition this season and with ten regions out to snatch the glory we can plenty of rivalry.
With the continued support of DHL the Future Stars is set to be better than ever this season and with more young talent emerging through the ranks the competition will be fierce.
With the creation of the
DHL Sprint School this year and the new
Future Revolution DHL are building on their investment in youth development in cycling and the Future Stars competition highlights the success of these intitiatives.
Guy Elliott, CEO of DHL Exel Supply Chain
“Working with the Revolution Future Stars is a great starting point for our plans to provide access to the sport of track cycling for kids who might not otherwise get the opportunity. We have young cyclists all over Britain who dream of being able to race at Manchester in front of the capacity crowds of the Revolution Series. DHL want to play our part by giving not only these young people the chance to train and race with world-famous riders and also, and perhaps more importantly, to provide an opportunity for other youngsters who might not even have considered track racing as a sport. We hope that some of them will turn into Olympic Champions by 2012!”
THE COMPETITION
All the Future Stars riders will still race to gain points for the individual boys and girls competitions with the overall winner being crowned the DHL Future Stars champion. Riders will also accumulate points for their regional team with points being awarded to every rider in each race (30 points for 1st place, then 29 points for second and so on). The culmulative points from all riders within a team will give the team their total for the evening.
With this structure it is very important that a team has a full compliment of riders to enable it to gain as many points as possible. If a team has less than six riders it can recruit riders over the course of the season. The team with the most points at the end of the competition with become the DHL Future Stars National Champion.
At each event boys and girls Future Stars will race in a Scratch, Devil Endurance and 1 Mile Dash. After each Revolution we will publish the results, latest news, photos and leaders tables here in the Future Stars section.
