NATIONAL MADISON CHAMPS
05 February 2009

From British Cycling website
A field of 16 teams has been confirmed for the British Madison Championships to be held at the Manchester Velodrome on February 21st, prior to Revolution 21. The race will see a former World Champion (Los Angeles) and Olympic medallist in the event (Athens 2004), Rob Hayles, do battle with riders of all ages.

Hayles, who has been competing in Madison events around the world this winter, partners current British Madison Champion Peter Kennaugh who won the title last year with road sensation Mark Cavendish. Whilst Hayles and Kennaugh, who won a silver medal in the event at the Beijing Track Cycling World Cup recently, are favourites, the race has many other teams who are sure to push them hard all the way.

How about an all Welsh team – Olympic Gold medallist Geraint Thomas riding with Olympic Academy rider Luke Rowe who has been competing in the UIV Madison events in Europe this winter. Or the team of Ed Clancy and Steven Burke. Ed, like Geraint, won Gold  in Beijing in the Team Pursuit whilst Steven won a Bronze in the Pursuit. These two have gone ever so close to beating the Madison Kilo record at Revolution and perhaps will show the way with the fastest lap take in history?

The rest of the field is made up of both experienced and young riders. Lewis  Balyckyi won the Youth circuit race title last year and is one of the youngest whilst Sam Harrison who has been winning well in the DHL Future Stars competition at the Revolution meetings, has just returned from the Cyclo-Cross World Championships and will be looking to find his track legs quickly.

Looking through the list you will also find Peter Kennaugh’s younger brother, Tim, riding with another talented young rider George Atkins. And talking of brothers, locals Simon and Adam Yates have thrown their names into the mix as well. In fact, the over whelming  majority of the riders are young juniors who may well be Olympic stars of the future and the event promises to be a great clash of experience versus youth.
