NATIONAL MADISON CHAMPIONSHIPS KICKS OFF SEASON FINALE DOUBLE BILL
Published 24/01/12
This Saturday is set to be an unmissable day for track cycling fans with the National Madison Championships and the Revolution finale both taking place at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester. Britain’s top riders are lining up to take part across the two events which will feature the likes of Sir Chris Hoy, Jason Kenny and Alex Dowsett as well as international sprint and endurance stars.
The afternoon sees the National Madison Championships take place from 13.00 - 16.00, where ten teams will battle it out for 2012 title. The likely favourites for the win are the formidable duo of Team Sky’s Alex Dowsett and Tom Murray of IG-Sigma but they will face stiff competition from the four 100% ME teams entered. Last year’s silver medal team Jon Mould and Tom Moses return again but this time paired with Joe Kelly and Alistair Slater respectively. Adam Duggleby and Alistair Rutherford are joining forces, as are Mark Christian and Simon Yates. With so much young talent on display it will definitely be a tight contest for the National title.
While the title race will be the centrepiece of the daytime event, there is plenty more racing to enjoy throughout the afternoon. Not only will the best British juniors will be in action in the DHL Future Stars Girls and Boys Madison races, the crowd will be treated to the sight of GB’s best sprinters competing in the qualifying rounds for the Revolution sprint racing that evening. Sir Chris Hoy, Jason Kenny and Matt Crampton will be doing battle in the 200m time trial against the visiting French internationals Michael Bourgain, Michael d’Almeida and Quentin Lafargue, as well as the newly launched VSprint team featuring GB stars,David Daniell, Philip Hindes and Pete Mitchell. These riders will also compete in the first round of the Match Sprint providing a packed programme of sprinting to complement the Madison action.
With tickets for the evening Revolution sold out, this afternoon session is the only opportunity to see the GB sprint stars in action as they look towards next month’s World Cup in London and, ultimately, the Olympics this summer.
