Reviews of the Best Trek Mountain Bikes

1. Trek Fuel Ex 9.9 Mountain Bike

Trek’s new Fuel Ex 9.9 has seen some major improvements over the last year. The 2020 model is longer, slacker, stiffer, and comes with bigger tires. It has gone up to 140mm travel in the front and offers 130mm in the rear. It is a trail bike with hints of enduro which makes it perfect for mountain rides.

The bike is fitted with Trek’s premier shock technology and hearty Fox 36 forks. The rear suspension is superb, offering a blend of support, sensitivity, and control that is unmatched in other mountain bikes. The suspension handles bumps in the road superbly and pedals like there is nothing to overcome.

The new, longer, and slicker geometry offers a more controlled feeling when you are riding the trail with a dropped saddle. The bike’s steering is light and flexible. The bike climbs technical singletrack very nicely.

It has a nice suspension platform and crisp pedaling manners that help you glide through climbs. On downhill runs, it feels very sure-footed and rides a better than its geometry might suggest.

Why We Like It
  • Wide range of sizes and colors
  • Excellent suspension
  • Well balanced geometry
Our Verdict

Trek’s 2020 Fuel EX has more travel, is stiffer, and is built with bigger parts. It’s a bit heavier and more capable in rowdy terrain, but still an excellent all-purpose trail bike.

2. Trek Rail 9.9 Mountain Bike

The brand new Trek Rail 9.9 replaces the Powerfly as their top-end mountain bike. With the much improved Rail 9.9, Trek has focused on better trail performance than long-distance riding comfort.

People who have used Trek bikes will instantly recognize Rail 9.9 as a Trek. It offers a beautiful and high-quality carbon frame with 29″ wheels that are very similar to the Slash model. It is longer than most bikes and offers 160 mm travel up front and 150 mm at the rear.

The company has integrated the current Bosch Performance Line CX motor on this bike which can generate up to 75 Nm torque. The motor is nicely placed on the frame and it is powered by a well-integrated 625-watt hour battery. The battery can be removed from the side of the down tube within seconds and is easy to carry thanks to the convenient handle. It has a Kiox display which is elegantly mounted on the top tube of the Rail 9.9.

Additional components include the in-house Bontrager carbon cockpit, SE5 Team Issue tires, and Bontrager Line Pro carbon wheels. It has Shimano XT 4-piston brakes, a wireless X01 AXS drivetrain, and a Reverb AXS dropper post.

The best feature is the RockShox Deluxe RT3 shock. Specially designed for Trek Bikes, the shock has fewer seals and allows a far super response on the rear suspension.

Why We Like It

  • Great look
  • Top class performance
  • Integrated Bosch motor

Our Verdict

The Trek Rail 9.9 seamlessly glides over super rough terrain as if it is on rails. Active and fast riders will be able to push their limits on any trail without noticing any drop in performance from the bike. A remarkable bike, though a bit pricey.

3. Trek Marlin 7 Mountain Bike

The Marlin 7 is ideal for aspiring racers, everyday trail riders, and casual commuters who want a good budget option. Trail riders who like to pedal fast will appreciate its steep, pronounced head and seat angles. It has been designed with a high bottom bracket that offers decent pedal clearance on the trail.

The bike’s cables are internally routed, which is unique for a bike at this price range. It has a 2×9-speed Shimano drivetrain that is much better than the single-chainring trend that we’ve seen in so many off-road bikes. The bike offers plenty of gearing options which is great for mountain bikes.

Other components include the RockShox XC30 100mm coil-spring fork. While the fork is heavier than similar air-spring models, it does a fantastic job on super-rocky trails.

The 2.2-inch-wide Bontrager tires on the 29-inch Bontrager Connection rims gave a solid grip on our test run. The bike never squirmed or slipped on sketchy terrain.

Marlin 7 is a winner that not only looks fast but also offers the kind of sharp handling and precise steering that you’d expect from higher-priced racing models. It comes in a women’s version as well with appropriate seat and size adjustment.

Why We Like It
  • Wide range of gears
  • Good grip and control
  • Great value
Our Verdict

Trek Marlin 7 is designed like a racing-style bike, making it great for downhill as well as any type of off-road trail. If you consider the number of features and quality parts that come integrated with the Trek Marlin 7, it is worth every penny.

5. Trek Remedy 9.8 Mountain Bike

The Remedy series has been a staple in Trek’s line up for 10 years now. The latest model 9.8 was introduced in 2019. Trek increased the travel for this bike to 150mm from the previous versions’ 140mm. The reach and wheelbase are also longer and the headtube angle is 1 degree more slack, making it a much more capable machine.

Trek designed this bike with a straight downtube that does not have relief for the front fork. This helps create a stiffer and lighter frame. To prevent contact between the fork crown and the frame, they’ve molded a rubber guard which is glued to the downtube. They have also laid out a special keyed headset that prevents the fork and bars from rotating far enough to hit the frame.

What makes the bike stand out from the competition is its ability to glide over the trail and bounce over obstacles, instead of simply smashing through junk. Trek has installed their proprietary Re:Aktiv valving and Thru Shaft architecture inside the RockShox Deluxe RT3 on this model and it can handle anything on bumpy trails.

Why We Like It
  • Stable and smooth
  • Can go very fast
  • Good control and comfort
Our Verdict

Trek Remedy 9.8 is a playful bike that jumps through obstacles and maintains a good balance on descents. It offers a sturdy carbon frame and comes with a kit that includes powerful brakes, a solid drivetrain, carbon bars, and a dropper post. Overall, a good quality, value bike.
